Car Diagnostics in Leeds

Red warning lights mean you should stop the car as soon as it's safe!

Steering Lock

Steering Lock / Electronic Steering Column Lock Warning Light

If the steering lock light turns red, STOP DRIVING IMMEDIATELY. The steering lock could be activated at any time while you are driving. There is a high risk that you could lose control of your vehicle. Please contact roadside recovery immediately.

Brake System

Brake System Warning Light

You will see the red brake light if the handbrake is on - this is perfectly normal. If the red brake system light is on and the handbrake is not applied, then please check the brake fluid levels. Get professional assistance if necessary. If the light remains on even after the brake fluid levels have been checked, DO NOT DRIVE, and seek professional assistance immediately.

Vehicle Charging System

Battery / Charging System Warning Light

Indicates a problem with the vehicle’s electrical charging system. The battery may not be charging correctly due to an alternator, drive belt, battery or related electrical fault. If the light stays on while the engine is running, switch off unnecessary electrical equipment and have the charging system checked as soon as possible.

Seat Belt System

Airbag and Seat Belt System Warning Light

You will see the red seat belt system light if there is a fault in the airbag or seat belt system. It is important that you have this fault rectified by an authorised repairer immediately. Failure to do so may mean that in the event of an accident, the system could fail to trigger.

Front Brake Pads Worn

Brake Pad Wear Warning Light

Indicates that the brake pads are worn and may require replacement. The braking system should be inspected as soon as possible and the affected brake pads replaced if necessary. Continuing to drive with excessively worn pads can reduce braking performance and may damage the brake discs.

Engine Cooling System

Engine Coolant Temperature Warning Light

If this light appears red on your dashboard, switch off the engine immediately and do not drive any further. Check the coolant level (refer to the owner's manual or seek professional assistance). If the coolant level is OK, then there could be a malfunction in the cooling system.

Contact roadside assistance immediately!

Emissions Control Lamp

Check Engine / Malfunction Indicator Light

Indicates that the vehicle’s engine management or emissions control system has detected a fault. The vehicle may continue to drive normally, but performance, fuel economy or emissions can be affected. If the light remains illuminated, have the vehicle diagnosed as soon as possible. If it flashes, reduce speed and avoid heavy acceleration, as this can indicate a more serious engine or emissions-related fault.

Engine Oil Pressure

Engine Oil Pressure Warning Light

SWITCH OFF THE ENGINE AND DO NOT RESTART. Low oil pressure will cause damage to the engine. Although this warning may be an electrical fault, DO NOT DRIVE until a professional authorised technician has carried out a diagnostic check.

Engine Management Lamp

Diesel Glow Plug / Pre-Heating Warning Light

Indicates that the diesel engine’s glow plugs are heating the combustion chambers before starting. When the ignition is switched on, wait for the light to go out before starting the engine.

If the light flashes or stays illuminated while the engine is running, it can indicate a fault with the glow plug system or engine management system, and the vehicle should be checked.

Ignition Switch

Immobiliser / Key Recognition Warning Light

Indicates a problem with the vehicle’s electronic immobiliser or key recognition system. The vehicle may not recognise the key correctly, which can prevent the engine from starting or cause an immobiliser fault warning. Try using the correct vehicle key and, if the warning remains illuminated, have the key and immobiliser system checked.

Diesel Particulate Filter

Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) Warning Light

Indicates that the diesel particulate filter is becoming blocked with soot and requires regeneration. The vehicle may need to be driven for a sustained period at an appropriate engine speed to allow the filter to clean itself.

If the warning remains illuminated after driving, or appears alongside other engine warning lights, the DPF or emissions system should be inspected.

Power Steering

Power Steering / Steering System Warning Light

Indicates a fault with the vehicle’s power steering or electromechanical steering system. Steering assistance may be reduced or unavailable, making the steering considerably heavier than normal. Stop when it is safe to do so and have the steering system inspected as soon as possible.

Electronic Immobiliser Active

Key Not in Vehicle Warning Light

Indicates that the vehicle can no longer detect the key inside the vehicle, usually on models fitted with keyless entry/start. This can occur if the key has been removed while the engine is running. Make sure the correct key is inside the vehicle.

Seat Belt

Seat Belt Reminder Light

This warning appears if the driver's or passenger's front seat belt is not secured. It may appear with an audible warning. For drivers travelling alone, ensure goods or luggage is not stored on the passenger seat, as this will set off the warning. If you have secured the seat belt buckle and there is nothing in the passenger seats that could be triggering the warning, please get your seat belt system checked as soon as possible by an authorised technician.

Seat Belt

Service / Maintenance Required Warning Light

Indicates that the vehicle is due for scheduled servicing or maintenance. Depending on the Volkswagen or Audi model, the warning may appear when an oil service or inspection interval has been reached.

It does not normally indicate an immediate mechanical failure, but the vehicle should be serviced according to the manufacturer’s maintenance schedule.
